The Legend of 1900 is one of my favorite films, it has taught me a valuable lessons, and through this installation, I hope to bring more attention to the film. I have divided its narrative into three parts: carefree, curious, and conflicted.
In the first stage, 1900 is joyful and mischievous, despite living in the lower, cramped, and stuffy part of the ship. In the second stage, as 1900 discovers his talent for the piano, he moves from the lower cabin to the upper one. The space transforms from oppressive and dark to open and bright. At this point, he is filled with curiosity about the world but uncertain about his future or direction.
In the third part, he is torn between getting off the ship to lead a "normal" life, as seen by others, or remaining on the ship, embracing the uniqueness that sets him apart. This internal struggle mirrors the lives of many, and I’ve incorporated symbols like scales and a lighthouse in the installation to represent this duality. Just as the name suggests, I hope this piece and my installation can help dispel some of the confusion people feel, encouraging them to see themselves as 1900 did.
